The publication includes two editions of one of the most famous plays by the great French poet and playwright Paul Claudel, “The Good News of Mary.” A comparison of the early edition (1912), developing the themes and images of the play “The Young Virgin Violena,” and the so-called final edition for the stage (1948) allows us to trace the evolution of Claudel’s work over almost half a century. The play, which the playwright himself called a “mystery,” occupies a special place in the history of theater not only because of its spiritual and emotional richness, but also because of the interest shown in it by such outstanding directors as O. Lune-Po, V. Dorn, A. Tairov, V. Meyerhold. The publication is accompanied by comments and an article that traces the history of the creation of the play and its fate in France and Russia, and also analyzes the basic principles of Claudel’s worldview and style.
