This book is the first edition in Russian of the mystery of the great poet and playwright Paul Claudel (1868–1955) “The Satin Slipper,” which is generally recognized as the most beautiful and most mysterious play from the entire French repertoire of the 20th century. At the heart of this long “Spanish performance in four days” is an attempt to answer the question of the mystery of love. If everything in the world is from God, love-passion should also be part of the plan of divine Providence? To answer this question, Claudel needs the entire created world, the entire universe, and the entire long experience of world theater - from the Japanese “No” and the Spanish drama of the “Golden Age” to the experiments of Max Reinhardt and Jacques Dalcroze. If the mystery about the forbidden love of the conquistador Rodrigo de Manacor and the beautiful Dona Prueze was played out on the sea, on land and in the skies for a quarter of a century, the author in “The Satin Slipper” mixes not only countries and eras, but also genres: high Racine tragedy and rough Moliere a farce, as if a tragedy were being played in the midst of a cheerful, unbridled carnival crowd. For, as the preface to the play says, “Order is the pleasure of the mind, but disorder is the pleasure of the imagination.” Written in 1924, the play is truly revealed only today: Claudel actually wrote for the stage of the future, that is, for you and me.
