From a long chain of nationally original works of Russian literature - “military” stories of the 11th-17th centuries. - the best ones were selected, combining the skill of depicting battle paintings with an understanding of the socio-political meaning of the events described. “The Tale of the Devastation of Ryazan by Batu in 1237,” arbitrarily compiled by I.I. Sreznevsky from various lists, was published in 1867 and then reprinted in various anthologies. The text of “Tales about the Battle of Kulikovo...” was reconstructed by V.P. Adrianova-Peretz based on the most authoritative list of the State Historical Museum with corrections for the other five lists. "The Tale of the Capture of Azov..." was first published by M.M. Shcherbatov in 1771, but the critical edition was carried out by A.S. Orlov in 1906. For this publication, the texts of the stories underwent new archaeographic study and reconstruction from handwritten sources.
