The Gospel of Judas, previously thought to be lost, is the third work in the Chacos Codex, occupying pages 33-58. The preservation of the manuscript is satisfactory, but in a number of cases, researchers had to assemble the text from pieces, like a child's mosaic. We note with regret that this was caused not so much by the antiquity of the code as by the barbaric treatment of it already in the twentieth century. Antiquities speculators who illegally owned the codex—let me remind you that, according to internationally recognized Egyptian laws, smuggling and resale of such monuments are a crime—not only did not want to provide it with decent storage conditions, but even began to sell the manuscript in parts. Only now will the codex be returned to Egypt and take its place in the Coptic Museum in Cairo next to the codices from Nag Hammadi. The text of the Gospel of Judas is a translation from an unsurvived Greek original into the Saidic dialect of the Coptic language. The manuscript, like the Nag Hammadi codices, dates back to the 4th century.
