The prose of Avrom Sutzkever (1913–2010) is only a small part of his creative legacy, but its importance cannot be overestimated. Without it, as well as without his poems, it is impossible to imagine not only Jewish, but also, without exaggeration, world literature of the 20th century. The book “Where the Stars Sleep” is a collection of stories written at different times and united by one theme - the meaninglessness, inhumanity and cruelty of war. Symbolic, rich in metaphors and comparisons, Sutskever’s prose is akin to poetry—so deep are its images. Sketches and short stories are attached to each other, like links in one chain. Previously, only the cycles “Green Aquarium” and “Diary of the Messiah” were translated into Russian; the remaining stories were translated for the first time.
