This book is based on a recording of Annie Ernault’s speech in Yveto, the town of her childhood in rural Normandy, where the writer came at the invitation of the municipality in 2012 - several decades later, when Yveto existed for her only in memory and writing. The city, along with its inhabitants and order, is a key character in Erno’s books. It is located at the intersection of the personal and the social: the vicissitudes of growing up here are inseparable from the awareness of class inequality, and writing and literature walk along the blade between the vernacular language of the workers and the refined “language of the enemy.” The book includes letters from Annie Erno, fragments of diaries, photographs, and interviews researcher of her work Marguerite Cornier.
