In Power is a novel by French writer Annie Ernault, first published in 2003. The narrator breaks up with her partner V after six years of dating. But it is not separation that becomes the theme of this novel, balancing, as always with Erno, on the brink of document and fiction, but the new woman V. Seized by burning jealousy for an unfamiliar rival, the heroine observes the collapse of her moral values. The obsession grows, and the text becomes a way for the narrator to give it material form. Through the story of her own madness, Erno explores the nature of language: by trying on stereotypes and clichés, she eludes banality and achieves uncompromising precision. Through the outline of the narrative, what really interests Erno emerges - physicality, words, writing.
