The artist Konstantin Somov (1869-1939) left the Soviet Union in 1923. He went to the United States of America to organize a large exhibition of Russian art and never returned to the USSR. Somov's diary tells not only about the exhibition. It contains the life of Russian New York in the mid-1920s: the intrigues of secret Soviet agents, tours of the Moscow Art Theater led by Konstantin Stanislavsky, concerts of Fyodor Chaliapin and Nikolai Medtner. Among the main characters of these extremely frank notes are the composer Sergei Rachmaninov and his youngest daughter Tatyana. They not only posed for Somov, but were also part of the artist’s inner circle. The publication is equipped with detailed reference materials and unique photographs. The historian of Russian art Pavel Golubev, who prepared this book, selected rare documents for commentary. Most of them have not been published before, many were classified.
