This volume of the collected works of J. Verne presents two of the writer’s novels that had not previously been translated into Russian, published after his death in a distorted form. The new translations are made from the original Jules Verne manuscripts published in the 1990s in France and Canada. “The Beautiful Yellow Danube” is the author’s version of the novel “The Danube Pilot”. The story centers on the adventures of the winner of a fishing competition, traveling by boat along the Danube from its source to its mouth. The reader will become acquainted with the fauna and physical and geographical features of the great river, with the cities and villages located along its banks, with their architectural and historical monuments. A detective intrigue is skillfully woven into the plot: the pursuit of a gang of smugglers. The second novel, “In Magellan,” is known to us in the adaptation of M. Verne, the writer’s son, entitled “The Shipwreck of Jonathan.” In the original text, more space is given to geographical descriptions of the Strait of Magellan region, pictures of the life of the Indians, extremist social movements are more sharply condemned; the author more actively advocates the rational use of natural resources and shows the harmfulness of an irrepressible passion for profit. The desire for the good of others contributes to the spiritual rebirth of the hero of the novel, an anarchist by conviction. He turns into a politician reconciled with the need to maintain public order...
