Dario Fo’s eccentric one-act farce play “The Free Couple” is about the position of women in the modern world. Liberation from prejudice, the power of the husband in the family, the rebellion of a woman against humiliating conditions of existence - the Italian playwright devotes his work to these topics. One fine day, the husband informs his wife that their marriage will now be free. Without mutual obligations of fidelity, because this is what, in his opinion, modern relationships should look like. Everything turns out simply and conveniently - for the husband - until one day the wife announces to him her own freedom. The heroes are trying to return the long-lost meaning to such concepts as happiness, love, marriage. The play is closely related to the Italian tradition of commedia dell'arte. A farcical beginning, the technique of “theater within a theater,” grotesque and buffoonery - the banal plot of adultery has turned into a sparkling comedy, endowed with deep semantic content.
