The translation of the book “Catherine II, Germany and the Germans” (1995), written by the German historian Klaus Scharf, known for his publications on the history of early modern Russia, is a significant contribution to the study of the Russian Empire of the second half of the 18th century, a period integrally associated with the personality of Empress Catherine II. Her personal life experiences, education received in an interfaith environment, and memories of her time spent in Germany were relevant to her until the end of her life. Beginning with the Seven Years' War and ending with the wars waged by revolutionary France, she sought to be the guarantor of the balance of power in the Holy Roman Empire and in Europe as a whole, and did this primarily in the interests of the Russian Empire, as well as in order to establish peace between the powers - the main players on the European political field. Scharf C. Katharina II, Deutschland und die Deutschen.
