Yes, Unabomber, Theodore Kaczynski is an odious figure. As anarchists, we disagree with the lion's share of his ideology. And yet, such qualities as the radicalism and intransigence of a man who has been serving his 8 life sentences for sending bombs to those whom he considers the culprits of the man-made crisis for more than 20 years do not allow interest in him and his thoughts to wane. And Ted does not neglect thinking. We translated the most important chapter from Theodore Kaczynski’s book “The Anti-Technological Revolution: Why and How?” He wrote it in 2013-2015. The original title of the chapter is “Strategic guidelines of the anti-technological movement.” We do not share the author’s anti-technological worldview, and, more importantly, we do not agree with his sometimes cynical and inhumane approaches, instrumental attitude towards people, hierarchical sentiment and much more. In short, almost everything that would make our fellow anarchist wince, we winced just like you. And yet we consider this text extremely important and valuable. Why? Because we need a revolution that is not anti-technology, but anarchic. The main virtue of Ted's work is sober revolutionary optimism. Unabomber carefully studied an impressive array of data on past revolutions, analyzed and comprehended them and produced a brilliant study of the mechanics and technology of revolution. In our opinion, he successfully approached the answer to the question: “How to make a revolution?” But this is precisely the question that is key for revolutionary anarchists. Kaczynski can argue with many things. A characteristic feature of the text is its frequent appeal to the hoofs of the authoritarian left. Most of what Lenin, Trotsky, Stalin, Mao, Castro and others like them write is inapplicable to anarchist ethics and tasks. However, anarchism today faces the need to rethink the experience of its victories and bitter defeats, and most importantly, to find a path to the victorious implementation of its revolutionary liberation ideas. This means that we, anarchists, cannot lose sight of the experience of other, even very ideologically distant revolutionaries, analyze it and take what is valuable to us. We also urge you not to judge strictly some minor factual flaws (especially noticeable to people familiar with the history of the Russian revolution). And before you discard one or another of his thoughts, try to think about it impartially and appreciate the pragmatism and directness of the author, which are not so common in revolutionary analytics.
