Dona, the reckless Lady of St. Colum, in a fit of disgust with the social life she leads in London, goes to Navron, a secluded estate on the Cornish coast that belonged to her husband. There she discovers that their house has become the secret hideout of a French pirate, terrorizing the entire area. However, meeting him changes Lady St. Colum's ideas about sea robbers. Instead of a bloodthirsty thug with a team of inveterate scoundrels, she faces an ironic, brave, educated and very charming man - the one she has been waiting for all her life... A romantic love story is combined with an exciting adventurous plot against the backdrop of the mysterious landscapes of Cornwall of bygone times. The novel “French Creek” was published in 1941 and three years later was filmed. The title role was played by Joan Fontaine, the famous performer of the role of Rebecca, another heroine of Daphne Du Maurier, in the film of the same name by Alfred Hitchcock.
