The third volume “Literature of the mid-19th century.” (late romanticism)" is dedicated to one of the most striking periods of American culture, associated with the formation of national literature and a new stage in the development of romanticism. The book examines the features of late American romanticism, represented by the work of such major artists as N. Hawthorne, G. Melville, E. Poe, G.W. Longfellow, who became figures on a global scale. The patterns of development of prose, poetry and drama of this period are revealed. Particular attention is paid to ethnic problems - the literature of African-Americans and Indians. Artistic phenomena can be traced in close connection with socio-historical processes - the anti-slavery movement and the Civil War.
