“Once, when I was already old, a man approached me in the lobby of a hotel. He introduced himself and said: “I have known you all my life. Everyone says that you were very beautiful in your youth, but I came to say that I find you more beautiful now...” Thus begins the novel “The Lover” (1984), which brought Marguerite Duras The Goncourt Prize and world fame. The real events that formed the basis of the sensational novel are an incredible love story that until the end of her life - for 16 long years - connected the already middle-aged Duras with the young student Ian Andrea. In the novel "Blue Eyes, Black Hair" (1986) this story found perhaps its most sensual reflection. Perhaps this is a figment of the imagination. Or maybe it’s the cruel truth of their relationship.
