Winner of prestigious literary awards, Japanese writer Masako Bando (1958–2014) became famous for her works in the genre of mysticism and horror, managing to preserve the flavor of the “kaidan” (“stories of the supernatural”) genre, popular in medieval Japan. But her famous novel “The Mandala Road” does not fit into the traditional framework of the modern “kaidan”, although mystical elements play a key role in it. This is a frank and at times unwomanly tough book-reflection on the impasse into which modern Japan has reached. The author is not afraid to raise sensitive and uncomfortable questions - it is not for nothing that the writer is treated ambiguously in Japan, and during her lifetime she was even criticized and condemned for overly harsh statements, earning a reputation as a person who goes against generally accepted opinion. In the strictly regulated Japanese culture, this type of behavior requires special courage and courage.
