Tokyo fashion designer Hinako arrives at a class reunion in her hometown and discovers that her closest childhood friend has long since died. But it’s not for nothing that Shikoku is called the island of the dead. After all, according to Shinto belief, if you walk around all the island temples counterclockwise, a loved one can return to life.
“Island of the Dead” is the most popular novel by the famous Japanese writer Masako Bando, who writes in the mystical genre of “kaidan”. This genre became known in Russia, first of all, thanks to the book (and of course, the film) “The Ring” by Koji Suzuki. Here, ordinary everyday reality comes into contact with the mysterious world of spirits - the world of cold and death. Such stars as Stephen King and Charles de Lint wrote about the horror that threatens a person who disturbs the peace of the dead. But, perhaps, Japanese writers did it better than anyone in the world.
