A little boy asks for a toy. But the teacher doesn’t hear him - she needs to fill out a bunch of papers before the smoke break. However, she never listens to what the children tell her: they are still “incurable,” and therefore doomed. The fate of orphans is bitter, but a hundred times worse is the fate of disabled orphans caught in the merciless gears of the machine known as the state system of guardianship for children with disabilities. The boy faces trials that can break even a healthy person: loneliness, indifference and cruelty of adults, disappointed hopes. But he will overcome everything - with the help of people for whom charity is not an empty phrase, but a program of action. He will find his own home and family comfort, although for this he will have to leave Russia and turn from Vanya Pastukhov into John Lagutsky.
