Although modern academic science rejects the version of the Slavic nature of the Rugi, arguing that the Rugi are an East German tribe of the Great Migration era, a number of Russian historians, in the 19th and 20th centuries, confidently say the opposite. Slavic historian of pre-revolutionary Russia V.I. Lamansky considered the Ruyans and Rugs to be one tribe. The Soviet historian G. Kuzmin wrote that the names Rugi, Rogi, Ruzi, Rus, Ruyans refer to the same people. The modern historian S.V. agrees with him. Perevezentsev, in his popular science works, also defends the point of view about the Slavic origin of the Rugs. The author of the proposed book is S.N. Chernyavsky decided to test his historical hypothesis, based on the assertion that the modern Great Russian ethnos arose from the mixing of two tribes, Rus and Rugs.
