We all remember from our school days the glorious victories of Alexander Nevsky on the Neva and Lake Peipsi. But few people know that there was another prince who defended the borders of Rus' at a time when the state stood at a crossroads and could have perished. This prince is a Litvin, but he is included in the host of Orthodox saints. His pagan name is Dovmont. Arriving in Rus', he was baptized and became Timothy. In the 14th century, one of the Russians wrote his biography, which was included in the chronicle, and the prince appears there under his Lithuanian name, Dovmont. Medieval biography, as it should be, glorifies the heroic ruler. The reality is much more terrible and cruel. Before coming to Rus', Dovmont took part in the murder of his master Mindovg, a great fighter against the crusading invasion of Lithuania. But this was revenge, not wanton murder. Mindovg took his wife from Dovmont. Having taken revenge, the latter fled, found a new homeland and no longer sheathed his sword, fighting for the interests of Rus'.
