Fear and Trembling is the most famous novel by the Belgian writer Amelie Nothomb. It was nominated for the Prix Goncourt, was awarded the French Academy Prize, translated into dozens of languages and filmed by A. Carnot. The heroine of the novel, Amelie, was born in Japan and is now returning to the country that she yearned for as a lost homeland, in order to stay forever. But attempts to observe Japanese traditions and customs always lead to trouble and turn into cruel lessons. Nothomb makes the reader laugh, scares and surprises, and in the end turns the myth of Japan inside out, building a plot around the psychological duel of two young beautiful women. In the novel “Tokyo Bride” Amelie Nothomb talks about the period of her life when she, after graduating from university, Brussels went to Japan, a magical land where she spent her early childhood. There she met a wonderful young man, with whom she spent wonderful days full of love. However, gradually the spell dissipated, and the heroine has to decide whether she can live in a fairy-tale castle from where there is no exit... A film by Stefan Luberski, based on this novel by Amelie Nothomb, will be released on Russian screens in 2015. Starring Pauline Etienne.
