Mike Engleby is an extraordinary person. Indeed, how else would a person from the “bottom” in the 1970s enter Cambridge and then make a career as a journalist? His confessional account of his own life, interspersed with painful memories, is a first-hand testimony that proves that here is a man tormented by complexes and at the same time endowed with a paradoxical analytical mind and a phenomenal memory, a man capable of deeply understanding literature and feeling music. Engleby’s lapses in memory seem all the more strange when it comes to the student Jennifer Arkland, with whom he was secretly in love and who mysteriously disappeared on a windy autumn night. Circumstantial evidence collected by the police seems to point to Engleby, but the main character does not intend to give clues to anyone - neither the investigation nor the reader.
