Bernardin Ribeiro's novel “The Story of a Young Girl” is one of the most beautiful and mysterious works of Portuguese literature. Very little is known about its author. Moreover, the book most likely had more than one author. A colorful world of high passions, almost always tragic, magical pictures of Portuguese nature, the abduction of beauties, and knightly fights is revealed to the reader. All this is happening against the backdrop of a crisis of knightly culture in the face of the bourgeois civilization that is replacing it. In addition, Bernardin’s novel is sentimental and psychological; it is almost the first time in Portuguese prose that the principle of psychological analysis is used. It seems that the novel will be of interest to a wide readership.
