He came from an ancient and glorious family and, having chosen a career as a naval sailor, became one of the brightest representatives of the Russian fleet of the early twentieth century. Commanding the cruiser Almaz, he showed outstanding leadership qualities in the Battle of Tsushima, and managed to withdraw his ship from enemy attacks and bring it safely to Vladivostok. He later commanded the Imperial Yacht Standart, the most beloved ship of the last Emperor Nicholas II and his family. The circumstances of the admiral's death are shrouded in mystery and are still the subject of debate among historians.
