The book “God and the Unconscious” is not even one, but three works by Edward Edinger. The first work in the collection, “The New Image of God,” explores the history of the development of religious ideas. Edinger, considers the history of mankind as the history of the development of the God-Image - from primitive animism to the concept of Individuation and the discovery of God in oneself. In the second work, “Encounter with the Self,” Edinger, using the example of engravings by the great William Blake, examines the psychological process of revealing the Self. From defeat and even collapse of ego-consciousness, to a new rebirth in the higher, “self-oriented ego.” Finally, in the third work, Edinger writes a commentary on one of the most significant works of Carl Gustav Jung, “Answer to Job,” a work about which Jung himself wrote as “the only work of mine in which I would not change without a comma.” For the convenience of readers, the biblical Book of Job and the already mentioned work of Carl Gustav Jung “Answer to Job” are given as an appendix without abbreviations. It is necessary to understand that all the works included in this volume allow us to answer perhaps the most difficult question - the question of the relationship of the individual Self with its spiritual center, the Self, the authentic and true Self, which in fact is very different from the sugary New Age pictures of the “all-good inner god.”
