The purpose of the translations and writings I have published so far was to provide preliminary information about those countries through which the routes leading into the interior of China lie. Order required first to examine Tibet, Turkistan and Mongolia, i.e. those countries that have long been in close ties with China, and through which China itself has connections with India, Central Asia and Russia.
