“As the hidden is revealed, as the lost are brought to the path, and light is brought into the darkness so that those who can see can see clearly, so the Dhamma Teaching has been explained in various ways.”
Buddhism is well known in the world as a religious tradition and has been studied in sufficient detail as a philosophy and as a system of psychological knowledge. However, people who turn to Buddhism also enter into another of its most important hypostases - the tradition of education. Until now, Buddhism has not been studied within the framework of the philosophy of education, and yet, in this tradition, for two and a half thousand years, education has been carefully cultivated and reflected.
In the publishing house Aletheya (St. Petersburg, 2014) The book by M. N. Kozhevnikova “Teaching: a book about the philosophy of education in Buddhism: in quotes, examples and reflections” was published. The thesis of the author of the book is that Buddhism is, in essence, education - continuous, lifelong education of adults. This most important hypostasis of Buddhism - the tradition of education, with special ideas about the role of teaching in life, about the goals, approaches, methods of teaching, requires reflection, especially in the world of the new millennium, where education is becoming increasingly important.
Monograph built on Buddhist materials from the southern tradition (Theravada) and northern tradition (Mahayana), contains many quotes and fragments of texts that directly introduce the reader to the field of Buddhist thought and educational practice. A number of problems and ideas raised in the proposed study of the Buddhist tradition were comprehended by the author in relation to the modern world and education in a broad context.
The work of M. N. Kozhevnikova, dedicated to “reading Buddhism anew,” allows readers interested in the philosophy of education will get acquainted with Buddhist ideas in this area, and those who are quite familiar with Buddhism will discover new paths and horizons in understanding the Buddhist tradition.
