It is easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism. After 1989, capitalism proudly presents itself as the only realistic political economic system. And the banking crisis of 2008 only worsened this situation. In his book, Mark Fisher, a philosophy teacher, renowned publicist and host of the popular blog k-punk (k-punk.abstractdynamics.org), analyzes the evolution and basic principles of the enduring ideological construct of capitalist realism. Analyzing specific examples from politics, cinema (Children of Men, The Bourne Identity, Supernanny), literature (texts by Ursula Le Guin and Franz Kafka), labor relations and education, he proves that capitalist realism colors all areas of modern way of life, and wonders how this situation can be changed.
“Let's not beat around the bush: Fischer's book is read in one breath and is the best diagnosis of our time! He draws from everyday life and popular culture, but without sacrificing theoretical rigor, he paints an unsparing portrait of our ideological misery. Although Fischer's book is written from a radical leftist perspective, Fischer does not offer easy solutions. Capitalist realism calls for patient theoretical and political work. And calls us to breathe more freely in the sticky atmosphere of capitalism that surrounds us.” (Slavoj Zizek)
