Admiral Yi Sun-sin's handwritten journal appeared during the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592-1598. The document comprises seven volumes of almost daily records, covering the period from January 1592 to November 1598, and breaks off on the day of the death of Yi Sun-sin, on the eve of the decisive victory in the last naval battle of the war. This journal has no analogues in history, presenting detailed reports from the commander on the progress of military battles. Compiled in the form of a personal diary, the journal describes in detail the daily state of affairs at the fronts, the admiral’s own opinions and feelings, his observations regarding weather conditions, topographical characteristics of battle sites and the lives of ordinary people. The style of presentation used is simple and elegant. Currently, this diary is widely used both in Korea itself and in Western countries when studying the history of naval battles during the Seven Years' War.
