Damon Galgut (b. 1963) is a renowned South African writer and playwright. The novel “The Good Doctor” was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2003, and shortlisted for the prestigious international literary award IMPAC in 2005. The setting of the novel is an abandoned homeland in South Africa, an almost deserted scenery town in which there is no real life and even death. The heroes - young doctors Frank Eloff and Lawrence Waters - are on duty in a small hospital where there are almost never patients. In fact, they have no one to save but themselves. Restrained Frank and romantic Lawrence live at opposite poles of a planet lost in the African forests. But several chance encounters, phrases and even thoughts one day turn their opposite worlds inside out, violating the seemingly unshakable border between idealism and skepticism. The choice once made turns out to be irreversible - in a world “without borders” there is room for only one hero.
