Claude Farrer (1876–1957) is one of the most prominent writers in France, under whose pseudonym was hidden the hereditary naval officer Charles Edouard Bargon, who served in the navy for two decades. And he became famous thanks not only to his exciting adventure novels, but also to no less exciting novels of love and erotic orientation, the plot development of which allows them to rightfully be classified as works of the adventure genre. In the novel “The Color of Civilization,” awarded the Goncourt Prize, the author made a successful attempt against the exotic backdrop of salon life, to show the everyday decay of the disappointed and satiated youth of the Baudelairean type. In Farrer’s second novel, included in the next volume of the “Caprice” series, “The Last Goddess,” the author masterfully intertwined the love experiences of the esthete-aristocrat Folgoet with the terrible events of the First World War, which anticipated the creative achievements of E. Hemingway, who glorified love against the backdrop of war.< /p>
