Kelemen Mikes (1690–1762) is an associate, devoted follower and servant of the great figure of Hungarian history, the fighter for independence of the Hungarian people, Prince Ferenc II Rakoczi (1676–1735), who became one of the key figures in the Hungarian national consciousness. Mikesh's letters were addressed to a fictitious addressee (“cousin”) - a distant relative, supposedly also living in exile, but in the distance, on the other, Asian, shore of the Bosphorus, a woman for whom he has not only family feelings. The lively, spontaneous intonations that color the letters testify to the intense spiritual life that the author lived in the absence of a real social life. In this - and not only in this, but also in the ability to suppress despair, which often became almost unbearable, and do his job - he is helped by humor, irony and self-irony. The work he left behind still captivates readers both in Hungary and in other countries. Mikes can rightfully be considered the founder of Hungarian fiction.
