The sparkling and caustic novel by the Croatian writer and rebel Dubravka Ugresic “Baba Yaga Laid an Egg” was written as part of the international literary project “Myths”. From the entire pantheon of legendary heroes, she chose (we will not ask for what reasons) the “terrible and terrible” Baba Yaga. This “beauty” in folk tales has never received either a leading role or even a certificate of honor. But in the eyes of Ugresich, she rose to the title of Great Goddess. In a novel in three parts, with humor and boundless imagination, Ugresich paints a picture of a journey into the world of the fabulous Baba Yaga and explains the nature of the myth about the Old Scary Woman, hidden in the forest and capable of the most unexpected actions.

(dust jacket)Old Witches lay good eggs. Polynesian proverb

Ugresic is an author you want to follow, she is fascinating. Susan Sontag, author of the novel “The Volcano Mistress”

“Baba Yaga Laid an Egg” is wonderful an example of what Ugresic's imagination is capable of. An intense plot intertwined with countless intrigues... Comedy... Postmodernism... A novel that challenges the most novel tradition and rather than tells the story of Baba Yaga, it explodes with several hilarious episodes. Three Percent

Powerful. Grandiose. Ugresic has written a wise and poignant tale in her own style... Every element has a hidden meaning, and repeated reading becomes a reward.National Public Radio

Once upon a time, Baba Yaga was the Great Goddess. Having survived a long and painful history of her own degradation, Baba Yaga has reached our time, unfortunately, in the form of her own caricature. Dubravka Ugresic, “Baba Yaga Laid an Egg”
