The book by famous journalists Andrei Soldatov and Irina Borogan (Novaya Gazeta, Versiya) “The New Nobility” is the first and so far the only serious and comprehensive study of the recent history of the FSB. The authors are not just professional journalists specializing in the topic of intelligence services, they are also direct eyewitnesses of many dramatic events of our recent past - from the Nord-Ost tragedy to Beslan. Nevertheless, their research is far from both equally widespread ideological poles - both from apologetic praises of the security officers and from hysterical slogans like “The FSB is blowing up Russia.” Soldatov and Borogan also refute the well-known opinion that the current strengthening of the influence of the FSB on the political life of Russia is a sign of the revival of the Soviet-style KGB. In their opinion, the current Russian intelligence services are a completely new organism, well suited to the conditions of the “period of primary accumulation of capital,” and their continuity in relation to the KGB is very conditional.
