The first translation into Russian of the Persian tafsir, or interpretation of the Koran, was made from the only manuscript known in the world, stored in the library of the University of Lahore (Pakistan). This “Tafsir” is a fragment of something created almost a thousand years ago, but which has not reached us entirely of work and is a commentary on the 88 verses of the second sura of the Koran “The Cow” (“al-Baqarah”). The manuscript owes its appearance to an anonymous author who came from an area bounded by historical Transoxiana (the Central Asian interfluve of the Syr Darya and Amu Darya) and Northern Khorasan, and who lived no later than the end of the 11th century. “Tafsir” is interesting not only as one of the early works of Muslim theological literature, but also as a unique monument of New Persian prose, which reflected the formation of literary norms at the level of grammar and vocabulary. The Appendix to the publication contains the text of the “Lahore Tafsir”.
