Paterik, or Fatherland, is the oldest genre of Christian ascetic literature. Church Tradition has preserved for us the words of the venerable fathers, the illustrious founders of Eastern monasticism, as well as short stories from their amazing lives, told by them or their closest disciples. Among these stories there are many stories about unknown ascetics, whose names, like their remains, were hidden by the deserts of Egypt, Sinai and Palestine. “The Great Patericon” is the most complete collection of “sayings of the fathers” in modern Russian translation. The book is a translation of the four-volume Greek edition, supplemented by materials from other collections. As in the “Ancient Patericon, set out in chapters”, already known to the Russian reader, in this collection the words of the holy fathers are distributed according to the main spiritual and moral themes that occupied the attention of the first mentors of monasticism. To help the reader, an index of the holy fathers and ascetics mentioned in the text is included.
