In his confessional prose, Varlam Shalamov (1907–1982) denies the need for suffering. The writer is convinced that in the center of suffering - in the Kolyma camps - it is not purification that occurs, but the corruption of human souls. In poetry, Shalamov glorifies the spiritual strength of a person who is able, even in the terrible conditions of the camp, to think about love and fidelity, about history and art.
