The Anglo-Saxon period of English history covers a total of six centuries - from the middle of the 5th century. to 1066, from the resettlement of Germanic tribes to the British Isles to the Norman Conquest. From this stage of English history, many monuments remain - charters, royal decrees, laws, letters, decisions of church councils and royal councils, works on grammar, poetry, etc. However, there are only two most important sources about the events of this era: the work of the Anglo-Saxon scribe Bede the Venerable “Ecclesiastical history of the English people" and the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. We present to your attention the translation of the latter. Almost all the key moments of Anglo-Saxon history are described in one way or another in the texts published in this book. On the pages of the Chronicle you can find a capacious and vivid presentation of the turbulent English history in the early Middle Ages, when the contours of a state gradually emerged on the map of young Western Europe, which later became one of the main players in the political arena of the world. From the birth of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, through a whirlpool of battles and invasions, the chronicle leads us to the decline of Anglo-Saxon society, which suffered a crushing defeat on the day of the Battle of Hastings - a battle of those that changes the fate of continents.
