The combination of serious moral and social issues with the traditional form of the comic novel allowed the founder of realism in Swedish literature, A. Strindberg, in “Inhabitants of the Island of Hemsø,” to draw a fairly expressive panorama of everyday life and give a satire on petty-bourgeois morals, to recreate the conflict between the forces of nature and bourgeois civilization. Another conflict of the novel develops between the hero of the novel - the hired worker Carlson, a stranger and wanderer, an active and enterprising man, similar to Hamsunov's tramps - and the owners and ordinary people who, despite the contradictory character of the hero, see him only as a rogue.
