During the Great Patriotic War, Soviet submariners sank and damaged 185 enemy ships and vessels. 96 Soviet submarines and about 3.5 thousand submariners were lost. These figures can only to a small extent convey the full drama of the struggle that was waged on the submarine front in 1941–1945. The main figure on any submarine ship was always the commander. For a number of reasons, it became possible to name the real heroes of the submarine commanders only in our time, when ideological shackles fell and documents from our and foreign archives became available. During the Great Patriotic War, 208 commanders went on military campaigns. As a result of studying the documents, a list of the ten most honored submariners crystallized. The achievements of each of the heroes of this book are unique in their own way. All the more paradoxical is the almost complete oblivion of these names in modern Russian society. This book aims to correct this injustice.
