Ilya Grigoryevich Erenburg (1891–1967), the author of a dozen novels and the famous multi-volume memoirs “People, Years, Life,” a world-famous publicist, considered himself primarily a poet. His younger contemporary, the poet Boris Slutsky, wrote about Ehrenburg: “The tone of his mature poetry is predominantly a confidential conversation, a confession, and not a sermon. It is very broad in the subject matter of prose, but in poetry it is not broad, but deep. He is a poet of few topics. But these are the most important topics.” The book includes poems representing all of Ehrenburg’s poetry collections, his best translations from French and Spanish, as well as articles about French and Russian poets, in particular the book “Portraits of Russian Poets.”
