The documentary and artistic work of a prominent political figure in Tsarist Russia, V.V. Shulgin, “What We Don’t Like About Them...”, written in 1929, is one of the books that have been marked with the “taboo” stamp for more than half a century. Even the new perestroika literary wave bypassed this sharp, most thoughtful work of the publicist, since it relates to the forbidden and most persecuted topic - the “Jewish question.” The book is especially relevant in our difficult times, when national relations are greatly strained. The author, with the tact and delicacy characteristic of a true intellectual, examines the question of the role of Jews in the destinies of Russia, looking for ways to bring peoples closer together. The reason for writing the book “What We Don’t Like About Them...” was the article by the Jewish publicist S. Litovtsev, “The Debate on Anti-Semitism,” published in emigrant newspaper “Last News” on May 29, 1928. It asked “without guile”, without “projection of Judaistic messianism”, for “honest” Russian anti-Semites to express why “I don’t like this and that about the Jews.” And to “no less sincere Jews”: “But I don’t like this and that about you...” As a result, “an honest and open exchange of opinions, with good will for mutual understanding, would bring real benefits to both Jews and Russians - Russia..."
