Not possessing great poetic talent, Ausonius (c. 310 - c. 394), nevertheless, is considered the most significant late Latin poet. His work, like that of many Roman poets of the late period, is characterized by a fascination with the formal side of verse, various kinds of complex poetic experiments (“jokes of the craft”, “ropalic” verse), conscious secondaryness, “quotation” of creativity (references to the authors of the classical era, centons). Ausonius became one of the first Latin poets to introduce autobiographical and everyday material into his poems.
