“It is impossible to understand a caricature without knowing the context,” says Andrei Bilzho, a contributing artist and former psychiatrist, and therefore dedicates his new book “My Classics” to explaining this context. Talking about what the great Chekhov, Dostoevsky, Turgenev, Pushkin, Tolstoy mean to him, the author mixes times, spaces, the writers themselves and their characters and creates his own, witty and unusually informative “textbook” of Russian literature. For each cartoon and for each phrase inside it, even the most famous, there is a link in the book to the source, a detailed commentary or a note from the author explaining the historical context. This combination erases centuries-old layers of interpretations and distortions and allows the reader to see the great monuments of classical literature with a new, vibrant look.
