Lukian of Samosata (125 - 180) was born in the city of Samosata (Syria), into the family of a craftsman. He moved to Greece, studied the Greek language, traveled to different cities and read his works to the general public, was a teacher of rhetoric in Athens, and at the end of his life served as a judicial official in Egypt.

Lucian of Samosata (III century AD) . e.) is one of the most brilliant Greek writers of late antiquity. The author of a large number of works, 84 of which have survived, written in a variety of genres (rhetoric, dialogues, satire, parodies, stories, philosophical treatises, etc.). Here there is a satirical dialogue, a pamphlet, a prolalia (a short speech that rhetoricians of the time of the Second Sophistry usually preceded their main speech), a counterversion, an epigram, a travesty of tragedy. He had a strong influence on the literature of Byzantium and European humanism, gaining numerous imitators (for example, in the person of Thomas More and Erasmus of Rotterdam, Fenelon and Voltaire).

Lucian's works, written in an elegant style in a very lively manner, are still have not lost their aesthetic value. In addition, they are an excellent historical source for studying various aspects of life in late antiquity. The first Russian translation of Lucian’s work “The Tyrannicide” was made especially for this publication.

The publication contains a complete Russian translation of Lucian’s prose and poetic works and is of interest both to specialists and to anyone interested in the culture and history of ancient history peace.
