Several generations ago, the rightful king of Gwynnedd from the Haldane dynasty was overthrown, and the Festil dynasty, belonging to the Deryni race, established itself on the throne. During the reign of King Imre, a Deryni healer named Rice Turin (one of the confidants of Camber MacRory, perhaps the most powerful of the major feudal lords of Gwynnedd, also Deryni) learns that the old man who died in his arms is the son of the once deposed king, and this means that his only grandson, now a monk in some monastery, is the rightful heir to the throne. Circumstances lead to a conflict between Camber and the half-mad king, and a decision is made to restore Haldane to the throne...
