The tragic events described in the novel “The Shadow of Camber” led to the fact that Kelson again faced the question of choosing a bride. This time there was no longer any possibility of postponing the matter - the coming of age had come for Laem-Laos, the king of Torent, who for the last four years had been at the court of King Gwynnedd, formally a hostage, but in fact learning the sciences necessary for the king. Upon returning to his homeland, the young king must undergo an initiation ceremony - killijalai, during which the lords of Torent gain the power of the Furstans. The ceremony itself is structured in such a way that the seeker of power at some point becomes vulnerable to betrayal, and Kelson has every reason to suspect that Liem's uncles are up to no good, and he is determined to make every effort to protect the young king of Torent, whose friendship brings hope for the long-awaited peace between the two kingdoms. In the important matter of Gwynnedd's acquisition of a queen, help came from an unexpected quarter, although this did not bring joy to Kelson himself. However, apparently, he will find his bride at the court of Hort of Orsal, which Liem and Kelson will visit on their way to Torent.
