The novel “Journey in Darkness” (1934) by the famous English writer Jean Rhys (1890–1979) was perceived in its time as a real revelation. For the first time, the tragedy of forced wandering is shown through the prism of the experiences of an ordinary person, and not an artist or writer. The story of a girl born on one of the Caribbean islands, who tried to find shelter and peace of mind in her father’s homeland, in dank and foggy London, sounds very modern. The inner world of the heroine is conveyed with rare subtlety and accuracy, thanks to a special, restrained and tense intonation. The novel is being published in Russian for the first time.

...(Jean Rhys) has incredible intuition and an amazing - almost pathological - passion to stand up for the weak. As for her writing style, I was always struck by her innate sense of artistic form - the vast majority of English prose writers lack it, and practically none of the female writers possess it. Ford Madox Ford “Preface” to the collection of short stories by Jean Rhys “The Left Bank” (1927)

...Rice was thirty to forty years ahead of her time. Reading her, you understand: the writer is a stoic. "New York Review of Books" (May 18, 1972)

...her books have a special quality: time seems to have no power over them, and this happens because she doesn’t have a single false word. But the most important thing is not even this: she still has a youthful voice. New York Sunday Book Review (March 17, 1974)
