Prequel to Charlotte Bronte's novel Jane Eyre (1847). This is the story of Mr. Edward Rochester's first wife, Antoinette Cosway (known as Bertha Mason in Jane Eyre), a white Creole heiress, following her youth in the Caribbean, her unhappy marriage, and her migration to foggy England. Living in an overwhelmingly patriarchal society, belonging neither to the light-skinned Europeans nor to the black inhabitants of the Caribbean, Antoinette gradually turns into the mad Bertha in the attic of Thornfield Hall. As with many postcolonial works, the novel contains themes of racial inequality and the harsh realities of assimilation.
