England Away operates on three levels - past, present and future. Retired man Bill Farrell recalls his experiences during the Second World War, Tommy Johnson and his friends punch their way from Holland to Germany for an English national team football match in Berlin, and Harry Roberts contemplates his future with a brain ignited by excellent Dutch skunk and German amphetosis. Examining as if under a microscope the stereotypes of language and nationalism, the primitive impulses of lust and aggression, the author masterfully leads to the culminating unity of the English tribes and their blitzkrieg on the streets of Berlin.
